{"id":17,"date":"2016-05-27T13:55:16","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T13:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/congregationalucc.com\/website\/?page_id=17"},"modified":"2025-08-27T18:21:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T18:21:44","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/congregationalucc.com\/website\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Our History<\/h2>\n<p>We are a community of people, friends and neighbors and families, seeking a relationship with God and with one another.\u00a0 Many of our folks come from a religious tradition other than United Church of Christ.\u00a0 In some ways we are outsiders welcoming people, seeking to make connections.\u00a0 We are progressive and we are people who perhaps have been stung or even shunned for our belief that God is loving and accepting of people who may be different from us.\u00a0 And some of us were those &#8220;different&#8221; people seeking love and acceptance, eager to find a church that proclaims God&#8217;s love for all.<\/p>\n<p>We say, and we believe, that Congregational Church truly welcomes the presence and participation of all regardless of age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identification, background, or even university loyalties!<\/p>\n<p>We are a leading congregation in Greensboro and in North Carolina in matters of social and racial justice.\u00a0 We are a leader in full marital rights for all loving couples. Our members and regular attenders are learning and growing and active in their faith.\u00a0 Few of us are life-long members of our denomination \u2013 we\u2019ve got ex-baptists, ex-catholics, ex-unitarians, and ex-coffee shop and Sunday papers denizens.\u00a0 One quarter of our people are retired, many of them are busier now than when they pursued their careers.\u00a0 We have school teachers, professors, school administrators, counselors, social workers, police officers, nurses, medical techs.\u00a0 We have a number of families with adopted children.\u00a0 We have a lot of introverts.\u00a0 And we laugh a lot, at ourselves, our foibles, sometimes we laugh at our clergy.<\/p>\n<p>Our church was founded in 1900 and met in a Quaker Meeting House,\u00a0 as a mission church of the Christian Church, a predecessor of the Congregational Christian Church, itself a predecessor of the United Church of Christ.\u00a0 Our church moved into its own building in 1903, at the corner of Walker Avenue and Eugene Street.\u00a0 From there we moved to Radiance Drive to a new building in 1952.\u00a0 In that day, we were at the western edge of the city, and Friendly Avenue turned into a dirt road bound for Guilford College.\u00a0 Greensboro has changed some in our 117 years!<\/p>\n<p>To find out more about our church, our mission, and our organizational structure, you can review our Constitution and Bylaws:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/congregationalucc.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/CUCC-CONSTITUTION-and-BYLAWS-Rev.-2018.pdf\">CUCC Constitution and Bylaws (pdf)<\/a><br \/>\n<em><em><em><em>Who we are, our mission, and our governing principles<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/congregationalucc.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/The-First-75-Years-1900-1975.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The First 75 Years &#8211; 1900-1975 (pdf)<\/a><br \/>\n<em><em>A history of our church published on our 75th anniversary in 1975<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/congregationalucc.com\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/The-Beginning-of-the-Christian-Church-in-UCC-History.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Beginning of the Christian Church in UCC History by John R.
